Poster Design for WAC Summer Camp

I designed a poster with 3 different versions in 3 different languages for Westwood Alliance Church.

Description

I have worked on this project individually and reported to the marketing lead in the WAC Chuch Camp Committee. This was a one month project.

Skills

  • The main skills include ideation, creating low and high-fidelity sketches, and final versions of the poster.

  • Great communication skills are also required as the committee consists of people coming from 3 different languages, taking in their feedback and adjusting accordingly.

Objective

The objective of this project is to design a poster for people ages 12 - 80 to find out more information about camp and to register as soon as possible.

Research & Sketching

I researched on various camp poster designs and brainstormed different potential inspirations on the camp theme, spiritual formation

Moodboard I created for brainstorming the general look and feel.

Selecting Potential Images

I picked a few images that I think would fit well with the theme, spiritual formation and tried working with various text layout

Challenge

The image that the committee liked quite a bit of vines and leaves which makes it hard to read the contents. I then attempted to recreate a cross shaped as it is for a religious camp, and also would attract the eye more with geometric shapes. Moreover, I added a black stripe at the bottom so that the text can be easily seen.

On the left is a photo I found from the internet, and I have edited and modified it to become a poster background as seen on the right.

Challenge - Continued

After this iteration, the committee claimed that they can not see the replication of the cross and wanted the title to be bigger. Therefore, I change the typography and also made sure the hierarchy goes to the title.

Resolution

The committee liked the design with enlarged title and wishes to keep the light on the right instead of getting covered by a slightly transparent grey box filled with text. Therefore, I came up with this finalized design.

Final Thoughts

This design was more challenging than academic projects as there are different stakeholders involved and they all emphasizes on different aspects. For example some wanted to make sure more information are included, some would like the text summer camp be larger to make sure participants know what they are signing up for, some would like to make sure it is legible and aesthetically pleasing. It is hard to gain a balance between them and also to align everyone's expectations. Moreover, was hard to find images to work with that does not have copyright and suits the theme but with simple design so that I could design the topography on top of it.

In the future, I would provide wireframes and reference images for the stakeholders so that it will be easier for them to interpret and picture the outcome of the design. Also, I would research more on different kinds of typography and layouts as I believe a stronger Typography and layout could further attract attention.
